Why we use wood
Why choose wooden bricks?
Natural wood. More ways to create.
We choose natural wood for its character, its uncoated surface, and the freedom to make it your own. Build with it, add color by hand, or personalize it with laser engraving.
- Uncoated natural wood
- Color it your way
- Engrave your design
It starts with the material
Real wood. Nothing covering its character.
An uncoated wood surface. Visible grain. Natural warmth. Our wooden bricks bring the material itself into every build, gift, and personal design.
-
Uncoated from the start.
Our natural wood bricks have no paint or varnish coating. The wood itself is the surface you see, touch, and personalize.
-
Character in every grain.
Grain patterns and wood tones naturally vary. Those details give each brick its own look and can influence the appearance of your engraving.
-
FSC-certified wood.
We use FSC-certified wood. Responsible sourcing is part of our material choice, alongside the natural surface and possibilities for personalization.
Made for your imagination
A building brick. A blank canvas.
Draw a name. Color a letter. Paint a pattern. The natural wood surface gives your favorite creative tools a place to turn a simple brick into something personal.
Choose your creative tools
-
Pencils & crayons.
Add outlines, hand lettering, and layers of color. Let the grain become part of the design.
-
Markers.
Create bold names, shapes, and patterns. Try an erasable marker when you want to experiment with a changeable design.
-
Paint & stain.
Explore painted patterns or a new wood tone. Choose a product suitable for wood and follow its application directions.
Want to erase and redraw? Try your erasable marker on a small area first. Results depend on the marker and wood grain.
Laser engraving, made personal
Your design. Engraved into the wood.
Turn a logo, a name, or words that matter into a custom wooden brick. Laser engraving creates the design directly in the wood, with the grain still part of the finished piece.
Your brand, in the details.
Bring your logo, name, and contact details together in an introduction they can keep.
Your message, made personal.
Give a favorite verse, a thoughtful thank-you, or a personal message a place in someone's everyday.
Example engravings shown. Wood grain and engraving tone naturally vary.
Make your own mark.
Upload artwork or add text, icons, and a QR code. Preview your layout as you create, with optional engraving on both sides.
The natural advantage
Why we choose wood over plastic.
Renewable wood. Green electricity. A natural surface made for your ideas. We choose FSC-certified wood and CNC-machine our bricks using green electricity, creating an alternative to conventional plastic for building and personalized gifts.
-
A renewable starting point.
Wood is a renewable resource. We choose FSC-certified wood to support responsible forestry, bringing a naturally grown material into every brick.
-
Powered by green electricity.
We CNC-machine our wooden bricks using green electricity. This helps reduce electricity-related emissions compared with powering that process with fossil-fuel electricity.
-
Natural wood. Biodegradable.
Natural, uncoated wood can biodegrade under suitable conditions. That is a meaningful material advantage over conventional ABS plastic, which is not biodegradable.
The material makes a difference.
| What matters | Timber Brands natural wood | Conventional ABS plastic |
|---|---|---|
| Where it starts | Timber Brands natural wood A renewable resource. We use FSC-certified wood to support responsible forestry. | Conventional ABS plastic Fossil-based raw materials. Conventional virgin ABS is made from non-renewable petrochemical feedstocks. |
| Manufacturing power | Timber Brands natural wood CNC-machined with green electricity. Our choice of power helps reduce electricity-related emissions compared with fossil-fuel power. | Conventional ABS plastic Energy sources vary. Manufacturing emissions depend on resin production, processing, and the manufacturer’s power supply. |
| The surface | Timber Brands natural wood Natural and uncoated. Visible wood grain, with no paint or varnish coating. | Conventional ABS plastic A manufactured polymer. A molded plastic surface, with color and finish determined by the product. |
| Making it personal | Timber Brands natural wood Your design in real wood. Laser engraving brings names, logos, and artwork into the surface, with natural grain in every design. | Conventional ABS plastic Methods suited to plastic. Printing, decoration, and other customization options depend on the product and plastic formulation. |
| Biodegradability | Timber Brands natural wood Biodegradable natural material. Uncoated wood can be broken down by organisms under suitable environmental conditions. | Conventional ABS plastic Not biodegradable. Conventional ABS persists as plastic and can fragment into smaller plastic particles as it weathers. |
Comparison covers our natural, uncoated wood and conventional fossil-based ABS. Wood biodegradation depends on environmental and disposal conditions; landfills may limit breakdown.

The material & our approach
Why choose wooden bricks instead of plastic?
Wood gives you a renewable material, visible natural grain, and a surface you can engrave, draw on, or paint. We choose FSC-certified wood for our bricks. Natural, uncoated wood is also biodegradable under suitable conditions, while conventional ABS plastic is not biodegradable.
Are your natural wood bricks painted or coated?
Our natural wood bricks are supplied without a paint or varnish coating. The grain you see is the wood itself. You can keep that natural finish, choose laser engraving, or add your own decoration.
What does FSC-certified wood mean?
FSC stands for the Forest Stewardship Council. Its certification system supports responsible forest management, including environmental protection and respect for workers and communities. We use FSC-certified wood as part of our commitment to responsible sourcing.
Are natural wood bricks biodegradable?
Yes. Natural, uncoated wood can be broken down by fungi and other organisms under suitable environmental conditions. The rate depends on moisture, oxygen, temperature, and disposal conditions; landfills can limit that process. Keep building with, sharing, or repurposing your bricks for as long as you can.
How are your wooden bricks made?
We shape our wooden bricks using CNC machining powered by green electricity. Custom designs are then laser engraved into the wood. Using green electricity helps reduce the emissions associated with electricity use compared with power generated from fossil fuels.
Is the Timber Brands building system patented?
Yes. The Timber Brands building system is protected by issued U.S. utility patents. Explore our patents.
Personalization & everyday care
Can I draw, color, or paint on wooden bricks?
Yes. The uncoated surface can be personalized with colored pencils, crayons, markers, and paints or stains suitable for wood. Test your chosen product on a small area first, follow its directions, and let wet finishes dry fully before handling or building.
Can I erase a design and draw again?
Test your drawing tool on a small area before planning an erase-and-redraw project. How well marks come off depends on the marker, pencil, or crayon and the wood grain. Even an erasable marker can leave some color behind on porous wood.
Does laser engraving use ink or printed color?
No. Laser engraving creates your design directly in the wood without printing ink onto the surface. The result is an engraved design in natural brown tones. Colors in uploaded artwork are represented through engraving, not reproduced as full-color printing.
Will every brick look exactly the same?
Every piece of wood has its own grain and tone, so individual bricks and engravings naturally vary. The customizer helps you review the placement and layout of your design; the finished wood color and engraving tone can differ from the screen preview. See how customization works.
How should I clean and care for my wooden bricks?
Wipe them with a dry or slightly damp cloth, then let them dry thoroughly. Avoid soaking or submerging the bricks: prolonged moisture can swell natural wood and affect how the pieces fit. Store them in a dry place between uses.
Can I order custom bamboo bricks?
Yes. Custom bamboo bricks are available by quote. Send us your quantity, design or artwork, delivery location, and any required arrival date so we can discuss your project. Request a bamboo quote.
